Tipping your guide and porter at the end of a trek is expected in Nepal, and it makes up a meaningful part of their income. Here’s how to do it well.
How much
Ask us for current details.
When and how
- At the end of the trek, usually on the last evening or at the trailhead.
- In cash, in Nepali rupees. Bring enough from Kathmandu or Pokhara; ATMs are rare on the trail.
- Give it to each person directly, so your porter receives their share in full.
- Put it in an envelope with a short note of thanks. It’s a nice touch.
Fair pay first
Tips are a thank-you, not a substitute for fair wages. Ask any agency how much its guides and porters are paid, whether they’re insured and what loads porters carry. Our answers are on our promises page.
