Pokhara is the starting point for Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill, and the end point of the Annapurna Circuit. There are two main ways to get there from Kathmandu.
By plane
A short domestic flight. It’s the fastest option and the views of the Himalaya along the way can be spectacular on a clear morning. Flights can be delayed or cancelled in bad weather, so keep a little slack in your plans.
By tourist bus
Tourist buses leave Kathmandu early in the morning and take most of the day, with stops for food. They’re much cheaper than flying, and you see the countryside along the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers. Road works and traffic can make the journey longer than planned.
By private car or jeep
More comfortable and flexible than the bus, and you choose when to stop. It takes about as long as the bus.
Which should you choose?
- Short on time: fly.
- On a budget, or want to see the country: take the tourist bus.
- Travelling as a group or family: a private vehicle can cost less per person than you’d think.
